ABSTRACT

A 67-year-old man was referred to our department with a mass shadow in the lower lobe of the left lung on chest computed tomography (CT). Imaging findings suggested primary lung cancer, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT showed a high level of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose accumulation at the site, but transbronchial lung biopsy showed no malignant findings. A left lower lobectomy was performed, and PAS/Grocott staining of the biopsy tissue revealed characteristic hyphae, leading to the diagnosis of pulmonary mucormycosis. We report a rare case of pulmonary mucormycosis that developed in an immunocompetent subject and was cured by surgical resection
