ABSTRACT

In recent years, high-attenuation mucus (HAM) has been identified in many reports as a CT finding in allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Some identify the presence of HAM as a specific finding in ABPA.
Other diseases associated with HAM include allergic fungal sinusitis and cystic fibrosis, but neither has been reported in Japan. In this study, we report a case of bronchial asthma with eosinophilic sinusitis showing HAM on CT. At our hospital, we retrospectively examined the CT findings in bronchial asthma with eosinophilic sinusitis and identified that approximately 33% of patients had similar HAM findings.
If HAM is present, but the patient does not meet the diagnostic criteria for ABPA, bronchial asthma with eosinophilic sinusitis should be suspected.
