ABSTRACT

A 71-year-old man visited a different hospital with a chief complaint of left chest pain. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed left pleural effusion. A chest tube was inserted into the left thoracic cavity, and copious hemorrhagic fluid was drained. His blood pressure dropped and he was transported to our hospital with hemorrhagic shock. We diagnosed left spontaneous hemopneumothorax by contrast-enhanced CT which showed extravasation of contrast agents in the left thoracic cavity. Transcatheter arterial embolization was performed to the left supreme intercostal artery that was the source of the extravasation. In general, surgical treatment is given for spontaneous hemopneumothorax, but transcatheter arterial embolization may be an option.
