ABSTRACT

A 68-year-old woman was hospitalized for left pneumothorax and pleural effusion that had developed during chemotherapy for pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease. The pneumothorax did not improve with drainage, and bronchial filling with Endobronchial Watanabe Spigot (EWS®) stopped air leakage. We changed chemotherapy from clarithromycin (CAM) to azithromycin (AZM) and added amikacin (AMK) for 4 months. Currently, there has been no recurrence of pneumothorax, lung lesions have improved, and sputum culture is negative. Bronchial filling and intensification of chemotherapy were considered useful.
