ABSTRACT

A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to gain a greater understanding of the experience of studying abroad among pulmonologists in Japan. Questionnaires were distributed within the respiratory medicine divisions at medical universities in Japan, and responses were obtained from 75 people who had studied abroad. Most respondents were males with more than 15 years of experience as a medical doctor. Most overseas destinations were selected through connections with the medical university the doctor belonged to or other personal connections. The median years of experience as a doctor at the beginning of the study abroad was 10 years, and the median duration of study was 2 years. Most respondents went abroad to undertake basic research. Although many of them experienced language-related and financial difficulties while studying abroad, they realized its value in both research (87%) and clinical practice (63%). Many respondents expressed the hope that the Japanese Respiratory Society will increase its grants for studying abroad and assist in making arrangements at the overseas destination.
