ABSTRACT

A 72-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with persistent back pain. Chest contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a massive mass occupying the left hemithorax. A percutaneous tumor biopsy showed proliferation of atypical polygonal cells with osteoid and bone formation. Clinical examination and other investigations did not show any abnormalities other than the intrathoracic mass. Thus, the patient was diagnosed with intrathoracic extraskeletal osteosarcoma. The patient died two months after the diagnosis. An autopsy confirmed that the tumor had originated from the parietal pleura or surrounding soft tissue and had compressed the lung as it grew. Intrathoracic extraskeletal osteosarcoma is an extremely rare malignancy. Here, we report a rare case of intrathoracic extraskeletal osteosarcoma with a review of the literature in Japan.
