ABSTRACT

A 68-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a one-year history of left anterior chest pain. Chest unenhanced computed tomography revealed an irregular mass in the left S5 area and high-density linear opacification inside the mass. We suspected intra-pulmonary foreign body granulomatosis and a left upper partial pneumonectomy was performed for a definitive diagnosis. The histological examination showed that the foreign body granulation surrounded a piece of wood. We conjectured that the piece of wood had entered the lung 30 years ago when he was working in wood handling, but we could not identify how that happened, whether it was through an injury or by aspiration. We need to take into account that a intra-pulmonary foreign body may have entered the lung even in the absence of an obvious episode.
