ABSTRACT

Although the prognosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma is poor, it is also a fact that there are individual differences in survival time. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential prognostic factors that significantly affect the survival of malignant pleural mesothelioma patients. We retrospectively analyzed data obtained from 22 patients who died of malignant pleural mesothelioma. The median survival time was 263.5 days, and the average survival time was 347.7 days. Six patients died within 100 days of the initial diagnosis. High serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level was found to be a significant factor of poor prognosis. In sarcomatous type of mesothelioma, an inverse correlation between serum CRP level and survival time was evident. An establishment of treatment strategy for patients who had sarcomatous type of malignant pleural mesothelioma with high serum CRP level would be one of the breakthrough points in the management of malignant pleural mesothelioma.
