ABSTRACT

A checkup for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and smoking-related pulmonary disease at the time of the annual medical checkup for lung cancer was performed for three years using a simplified spirometer (Viralo 6) and low-dose chest computed tomography in a population over 40 years old who had received informed consent. A total of 421 people received COPD checkup screening. The chest CT revealed mild emphysema in 119, moderate to severe emphysema in 11, interstitial pneumonia in 4, and combined interstitial pneumonia and emphysema in 15. Of 63 persons referred for further examination, 25 had a diagnosis of COPD and 7 were treated with medicine. The COPD checkup system combined with low-dose chest CT may be effective to detect COPD and smoking-related lung disease.
