Paradigm shift from exercise capacity to physical activity: Why physical activity is important

Hideki Katsura

ABSTRACT

Patients with chronic respiratory disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are generally physically inactive in the early stages of the disease, and this physical inactivity is detrimental to their health outcomes. Physical inactivity not only impairs health-related quality of life, it probably shortens life expectancy. Therefore in terms of outcome measures in COPD, a paradigm shift from exercise capacity to physical activity occurs, and increasing physical activity is a prominent goal in the treatment strategies in COPD. In this regard, the recognition that physical activity as a modifiable factor in COPD is important enough to establish a treatment strategy to improving this activity.
