ABSTRACT

A variety of organisms play a critical role in respiratory infections, which may include mycoplasma, Chlamydophila, and fungus in addition to bacteria, virus and mycobacterium. Although novel techniques, such as molecular diagnosis and an immunochromatographic test (ICT), were applied in the clinical setting, it may be important that there are many cases of respiratory infections with unknown etiology. In this chapter, the usefulness of molecular diagnoses, such as multiplex PCR and the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method and newly developed ICT for mycoplasma infections, was introduced. Furthermore, future directions of development of novel technology and instruments for rapid and correct diagnoses of respiratory infections will be discussed.
