ABSTRACT

A 35-year-old woman presenting with fever and nonproductive cough after taking imported slimming health food (Super Fat BurningTM) was admitted. Chest radiography and computed tomography showed infiltrative shadows in the right upper field. Blood tests showed peripheral eosinophilia, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid revealed a high proportion of eosinophils (45%). Based on these findings, a diagnosis was made of her disease as eosinophilic pneumonia. After cessation of taking the slimming health food and administration of corticosteroid, symptoms, laboratory, and image findings improved. Following discharge from our hospital, she took the slimming health food against our advice. She was admitted to our hospital complaining of fever. Eosinophilia and abnormal shadows in the left upper lung field were found. Our report suggests that the slimming health food can induce lung injury.
