A recent study showed that the proportion of patients with active tuberculosis who demonstrate a false-negative result on the T-SPOT®.TB assay conducted with the T-cell Xtend® reagent (T-SPOT with TCX) might be high. In patients with active tuberculosis, we compared the proportion of false-negative results between T-SPOT with TCX and QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-3G). Among 121 patients with culture-positive active tuberculosis diagnosed at Kainan Hospital during the study period, 55 underwent testing with either T-SPOT with TCX (N=37 patients) or QFT-3G (N=18 patients). In the T-SPOT with TCX group, 9 patients had false-negative results; however, in the QFT-3G group no patients had false-negative results. The proportion of patients with false-negative results for T-SPOT with TCX might be higher than that for QFT-3G.
