We report the case of a 44-year-old man. The first symptom was uveitis which appeared 7 years before admission. He was then diagnosed as having sarcoidosis after bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy was detected. He had been prescribed corticosteroids and other Western drugs for the deterioration of systemic symptoms and small nodular shadows found in both lung fields 5 years before admission; however, he could not continue the treatment because of adverse effects, such as insomnia and palpitations. He was later referred to our department of Japanese oriental (kampo) medicine and was admitted not only because his systemic symptoms (e.g., chest and back pains, dyspnea, fatigue, and diarrhea) became exacerbated, but also because his pulmonary lesions were found to be expanded. However, his dyspnea and other symptoms appeared soon after kampo formulations were administered, and a chest X-ray taken 8 months after admission also revealed his improvement. Therefore it could be suggested that kampo treatment might be effective as an appropriate treatment for some specific patients of progressive sarcoidosis if corticosteroids and other Western drugs are not admitted.
